Forum: GratefulDead Subject: How many? (ForumS related...)

Just curious--so many of you seem to participate in multiple DEAD related forums. I only really visit this one, and DHook now and again. I don't even know how many there are...

My question is, how many DEAD forums do you actively participate in? IE, assuming most have a "forum" of sorts for conversations like these here, what are they and how many do you really visit each day, etc?

First off on "how many", there is LMA, DHook, and LSPub...others?

Let me know...would love to hear about them...LiA and others have provided some info on LSP, and I know Hook, but would love to hear from everyone else...

depends on your definition of "actively"...
There are a few that I visit. This is usually my first internet stop of the day.... lucky you guys!! :)

LMA was the first Dead related forum that I stumbled across, and I feel as if after 4 years I kinda know some of the personalities here, so as tell said it does have somewhat of a comfy feel to it.

I also occasionally participate over at the pub. Not as often tho'. Couple of times a week I'll pop in over there to see what is going on. Some good folks over there too, like there are here. Seems to be a younger crowd for the most part, with more folks into the later eras, which makes it a little different than here. Lots of interesting stuff to be seen and heard at both places.

Honestly though, the amount of time spent in these 2 places pales in comparison to the time I spend on the 3 or 4 fishing sites I frequent on a regular basis.....

No wonder my wife thinks I need to get a life :)

This is the only forum I regulary visit. The Dead channel on satalite radio really rekindled my intrest in the music. Forgot how into this band I used to be. Then, when I got high speed, I heard that you could download Dead music from a online library. How freakin cool is THAT! Was bummed to learn I missed the soundboards, but being able to stream is still awesome. Then I see people are talking about the Dead in a Forum and better yet REALLY talking about the Dead. I saw some here talk about a Hook place so I did a search for Dead forums. There are quite a few I see. Deadvids seems like a fun place. Cool concept. I dont participate there, but folk seem real nice. Good Skies found it to be a happy place for herself.
This Forum is most intresting to me. The barebones, unmoderated aspect suites me better. More like real life. Great mix of era intrests here, and the knowledge is plentiful.

Actively only in this one. I lurked for a long time before my first post to get a sense of things and waded in once I sorta figured out how how you bubbas roll. Still feel like the FNG at times, but most of you are good folk. I think the relatively unmoderated approach is good.

And any time I get the opportunity to sit and listen to a history lesson from Uncle Monte and Uncle Ashes - well that's a bonus. (Okay fine, Great-Grandfather Tell too)

Despite when the occasional backwash from the douchebag(s) of life flows in here - this is still a good place to hang your coat for a bit.

Indeed, who has the time?
Every moment I spend here is a procrastinated work minute that means I'll have to work at home for free to make up for it.

I would like to go where the chilly trolls don't go, but none of those places have the shows to go to and stream.

It's the Archive that keeps me here- so much music, so little time...

Exactly, amosearle.

Re: Grateful Dead related Forums...

Right here is your "home page." This place has the best GD live music interface on the internet, AND the best method of searching through it all. The Archive is your Grateful Dead forums portal. You can easily and quickly repurpose all your professional-looking HTML pages' content from The Archive forums, to CraigsList postings, and then onto your website - or visa-versa, etc. I have demonstrated this fact and explained it in great detail here. All the other Forums I've ever seen use extremely limited pseudo-HTML codes. This is very painful for me, and a great waste of time. They require a complete re-do from the legitimate HTML coding that was originally done correctly. While this bs method may appear to be easier for morons to use, 95% of users on these other Forums find it too difficult - or unnecessary, and they never use these phony codes. I've seen many of these other sites use a plethora of different phony codes for posting on forums. In short, this is bullshit to me or any web page designer. Things go rapidly downhill from there. How about if we just use one coding language only, and we stick with it? Let me be perfectly clear: HTML coding works just fine for web pages.

To expand on WT's question, it would be interesting to know how many posters here on this forum use multiple user-names, whether you use multiple names on here, or you are posting on other forums with different names than the user-name you are known as on here?

I am a real late bloomer/luddite, and really can't navigate the web all that well, or at least suffer from "WTF?! How do I do THIS or THAT?" when looking at a screen many, many times...so, this place just feels like home, is easy to use, and the regulars make it "comfy" for me...just don't have the time to waste anywhere else...did make a few efforts at Hook now and again, but could often post a post and get NO responses; here it's usually instant activity.

After all this, I did look in at LSP, and saw a great many names on the userlist thingy that appear here too! No "WT" as near as I could tell...

I use the same name here and at the pub, really enjoy them both, though I basically live at the pub. We all obviously share a ridiculous love for the band, the community, and the history, but I also like the mixture at the pub with some football, some chicken wing recipes, and some family pics'...etc.... And there has been a lot of trolling/infighting here which takes up too much time to filter through. When all is said and done though, we're all connected for a common purpose and it would be one hell of a picnic if we ever got together!Best wishes and re-listen to the 11/14/73 China>Rider transition if your bored. Mainly LSP and here. I like here b/c there's a lot of activity and a lot of regulars. That's also what I like about LSP. Personalities and eras aside, LSP is better in that it acts more like a real Archive as far as the forum is concerned. Posts don't disappear like here. I realize most of the old posts from LMA are still sitting somewhere, but they are difficult to find and follow over time. For that reason, you get lots of threads here about the same thing. There's no real organization. And there's also lots more trolls and acrimony here.

LSP is more balanced when it comes to appreciation of GD eras than you probably have been led to expect, and there's nobody forcing you to read the Vinnie era threads if you don't want to. The upshot is that you have good information about all eras, if you want it.

BTW whatever happened to rec.music.gdead? I spent a fair amount of time in there (97-01 or so) but I can't find the group. Anybody got an idea?

I just realized that there are others (who has the time???), and that some folks here, and even at Hook, have apparently given up on LMA and DHook, and moved ELSEWHERE (ie, from conversations as to so and so stating "I'm outta here!" and then apparently ending up at another forum [hence, my question] that they find to their liking).

www.rukind.org has a huge number of gear heads and musicians that are Searching for the Sound. Mostly music and technical discussion over there but definitely a fair share of hijacks and silliness. A lot of the GD tribute bands have members that post frequently on there.

www.deadvids.com has a chat room which is pretty nice with very friendly folks. spent last night and a good portion of this morning streaming the 12-9 Furthur show from www.gdradio.net while chatting with people over there and it was lots of fun to see everyone get excited during a solo and share a musical experience simultaneously, online.

Oh I hope there is an available stream for the Saturday and Sunday shows!
